Be the boss of your blog

boss of your blogBlogging professionally is no easy task.

You can’t just expect to create a few blog posts and then start raking in the money. Most blogs don’t experience profitable success until several months, if not a couple of years after creation.

However, that doesn’t mean starting a successful blog has to be impossible.

By dedicating the right amount of time and energy to your blog, you can quickly increase the likelihood of its success, and the best way of ensuring that you put the right amount of work into your blog is by treating yourself as a boss would. That’s right manage yourself like your own boss. No need to rent out a traditional office space, being your own boss in your Virtual Office works well too.

Create Expectations

When you first set out to start a blog, create a list of goals that you would like to see yourself accomplish (but be realistic). Write out what the purpose and mission of your blog is. Are you planning on sticking to a specific niche, audience, or are you just creating a space online to share your thoughts and feelings? Nest, give yourself a direct plan of action so that you remain aware of what you need to accomplish and just how you intend to do so. As with any project you may undertake, blogging or not, setting expectations for yourself will keep you focused and help you attain your goals.

Set a Schedule

If you don’t give yourself a schedule to stick to day in and day out, your blog won’t be successful. You need to create a schedule for yourself, cutting a specific amount of time each day for your blog writing posts, looking for advertisers, and inquiring about guest posts. I know from personal experience that when you allow for an open ended work schedule. I cannot count the amount of times that people have not completed tasks I assigned them because I did not give them a timeline to complete it. Tasks will either be forgotten or set aside to the last minute if there is not a set schedule. This does not have to be 40/week, just set aside a specific amount of time each day to stay up to date on your blog. Nothing loses traffic faster than a blog that is infrequently updated.

Manage an Inventory

Constantly coming up with new content ideas, finding new blogs to post on, and finding advertisers can be hard to keep track of. You need to create an inventory for each of these things to help you better manage your blog just like a real boss would. Keep a rolling inventory of blog posts. Keep an inventory of all the blogs you have contacted making sure to note which ones will let you write for them, and which ones won’t. Keep an inventory of your advertisers too. Nothing feels worse than losing money because information was carelessly misplaced and forgotten.

Being your own strict blog boss will require discipline, but it is this discipline that will help you get the work done you need to have a successful blog. Blogging isn’t easy, but neither is working for someone else. So if you want to enjoy the success of a profitable blog take the first step by taking yourself seriously and becoming your own boss.
