The length of a blog post depends on so many things: (a) the blog owner/writer's writing style (b) the mood of the blog owner/writer when they're writing a specific post (c) the specific topic under discussion (d) the target audience (e) the niche ....

The simple fact is, there are so many pros and cons for short and long blogs. Many writers can do short or long, depending on some of the factors I've listed above.

I enjoy long blog posts, but it takes a very good writing style to keep me engaged.

Sometimes, short and sweet is the best. So, even if you normally write long posts, if the message you want to deliver and how you're feeling dictates a short post - that's fine.

With time, as a blog owner, you get a feel of what your readers enjoy and expect.

As long as you provide enough info to educate your readers and provide interesting content to keep your readers engaged - it doesn't really matter how long the blog post is.

I've been blogging for a few months and seem to be averaging in the 400-500 word range. I have noticed the same situation that my shorter posts generate fewer comments. I would think that is because it is hard to evoke enough emotion from a reader in 200-300 words. That just isn't long enough to build a case for whatever your thesis is. I have found readers respond to personal situations or a list that leaves room for them to add a thought.

Of course, Seth proves there are exceptions to every rule.

I used to write very big posts, as much as 1000 words for my website www.ringofdiamond.com . But I did not get any traffic. Now, I divided each post into 2,3 or 4 posts, search engines has started sending me traffic.

I'm prone to writing mid-length blogs generally (between 300 - 400 words). I understand and subsribe to the concept of wanting to give your readers something to sink their teeth into without giving them the whole steak in one sitting. I believe it's important to give them just enough so they want more from you; ie more blog posts.

For me, as a musician, I liken writing a blog to writing a song. You've always got to have a climax in your song. It can be anywhere you want it to be really. But if you can build emotion or interest before you get to the climax, you create more interest than if you don't. So that requires some setup. And that setup requires time. Time in a song usually means a first verse. In a blog it's exactly the same and that takes words to draw your reader in before you give them a bite of that steak we were talking about earlier.

Make sense? Hope so...(Crazy musicians!)

This whole thought process here will play in my mind for years to come!

The one thing that popped into my consciousness while reading through all the postings was the age old argument of, "Which way should the toilet paper roll be hung...over, or under?"

I'm not belittling nor equating the conversation with the idea of 'how it's used'...but how it's presented. We all have 'favorite' ways of presenting and using items in our lives.

While reading through this posting, I really wanted to get to the end of it quickly. I felt the posting was lengthy and just wanted the bottom line. (no pun intended)

Yet, I am impressed with the 'thought' becoming a 'conscious act' of checking why I do what I do in my postings.

My conclusion: What I expect in length when reading a blog posting is not always what I have in length in my own postings! "Me pot; you kettle" :)
