This was a darn helpful article. Darn helpful.

It would have been even MORE helpful if I'd stumbled across it before I started my own blog. As it was, when I took on the project of mine, I was completely on my own. I knew nothing; I had no other friends or writer acquaintances that had blogs - no one to give me solid advice. I remember thinking it was stupid that no one I knew had thought of blogging yet, because blogging is such a good way to put yourself out there, but.... It ended up that I was the one who took on the task of forging the path within my circle of aspiring writers. And since I only started this forging a few months ago... I still don't know how I'm doing. (I don't have much traffic at all, which would lead me to think I'm doing poorly, but it could just be I haven't built up enough posts yet?)

The good news is that when I checked my first post against the advice written here, well... turns out I might have managed okay by myself. I think. I'm still lacking total certainty.

If anyone wants to take a look at my first post (or even my site as a whole) and give me a good critique, I'd love it. http://alicehatt.com/2011/02/05/hello-world/ No pressure of course, though, as I'm sure I'll eventually gain my own experience. If I keep finding great articles like this to help me out, I'll definitely be on my way. :)

I'm fixing to launch another project and have returned to this post multiple times thinking about the mission statement idea. Thanks for giving this guidance - it's quite valuable!

Your post really inspired me...and now I have a mission statement. An ambitious one, but something to work towards, I guess.

Thank you!

I'm stalking you, James! ;)

Love the article. I've started . . . three blogs in my life: one was a journal-style story, one was my attempt to make friends by being cynical about life (how original, eh?), and the third was a nonfiction journal about my life.

Only problem was, I figured out that I actually like having a private journal (the other two were sacrificed on the altar of I . If you're not trying to sell something, advertise, or make yourself famous, why blog?

Holy cow... This was great. The beginning of the article was really humorous, everything was so right on.

"Then you read what you wrote, decided it was silly, felt uncomfortable or just wasn’t good enough. And you hid that journal back in a drawer somewhere so no one would see how inadequate you were."

Haven't we all been there? Haha It's so true.

Great advice. I'm definitely going to keep this saved for whenever I feel called to start a blog...
